Meet the Founder

Dr. Hyunjoo Lee’s Journey

Connecting Nature, Food, the Senses, and a Sustainable Future

Dr. Hyunjoo Lee’s path began with a deep return to nature. After studying journalism and mass communication, she chose a life rooted in healing, ecological farming, herbs, and seasonal living in a rural village in Korea. There, she discovered the profound connection between food, the body, emotions, daily rhythm, and the health of the planet.

She later earned her Ph.D. in Korean Medicine Pharmacy and operated Girin Korean Medicine Pharmacy for 20 years, offering consultations and prescriptions based exclusively on plant-based herbal ingredients. Through years of working closely with people’s health concerns, she came to see that true wellbeing is not shaped by medicine alone, but by food, sleep, movement, stress, emotions, relationships, and the way we live each day.

These insights became the foundation of Five Senses Therapy, Dr. Lee’s signature Korean five senses approach. Rooted in the wisdom of Korean medicine, Five Senses Therapy integrates food, color, herbal tea, aroma, meditation, music, nature, and lifestyle practices to support balance and healing.

Dr. Lee has also been a long-time advocate for plant-based living and sustainable food systems. As the representative of Meat Free Monday Korea, she has worked to promote vegetarian and plant-based diets and helped public institutions, schools, and communities adopt more sustainable food practices. As a Special Advisor to the EAT Foundation, her work connects personal health with food system transformation, climate action, biodiversity, and a sustainable future.

To further deepen her expertise, Dr. Lee completed the Lifestyle Medicine program at Harvard Medical School and the Plant-Based Nutrition program at Cornell University. As a Certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional and a Blue Zones Health Professional, she integrates evidence-informed lifestyle medicine with the philosophy and practice of Five Senses Therapy.

She is also the author of eight books, including the bestseller The Practice of Vegetarian Eating (Chaesik Yeonseup), and has continued to share her message on food, the body, emotions, healing, plant-based living, and sustainable lifestyles. As a speaker and educator, she is devoted to translating complex conversations about health into everyday language, helping people learn how to care for their own bodies and lives with greater awareness.

Today, based on Bowen Island, Canada, Dr. Lee leads Bowen Lifestyle Medicine Centre, where she integrates lifestyle medicine, plant-based education, Blue Zones-inspired programs, and Ogam Therapy. Surrounded by forest, ocean, gardens, and quiet island life, her work guides people back to a more balanced, meaningful, and sustainable way of living
